Community Health Promotion

With funding and support, we conduct culturally specific outreach to create awareness on many health topics and changes that are happening in Oregon. One such change is with Oregon Health Insurance (OHP) beneficiaries. We provide education and enrollment assistance to our population and other communities in Oregon to help individuals impacted by Medicaid redeterminations understand their options and enroll in health coverage through the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace. Also, through partnership, we connect interested community members to community health worker classes and other training.

Are you losing your health plan? Are you looking for health coverage options in Oregon? The Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace is a hub for information about health coverage, financial help, and programs.

People in every county of Oregon can purchase a plan through the Marketplace. All plans sold through the Marketplace include a comprehensive set of essential health benefits and are regulated by the State of Oregon. Although you can buy private health plans directly through an insurance company, financial assistance is available only through the Marketplace. You can apply and enroll in health coverage with financial help through Marketplace. Visit OregonHealthCare.gov/WindowShop to get a good estimate of the cost and savings you may qualify for.

Chronic diseases are conditions that last a year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both. They are conditions that can usually be controlled but not cured. Chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, arthritis, dental disease and HIV, are major causes of disability and death for Oregonians.

Utilizing our partnerships we work on community engagement and outreach, educating and distributing materials geared towards chronic disease prevention. We also focus our work on providing culturally specific health education workshops and commercial tobacco-use prevention. These programs’ purpose is to improve our quality of life.

Commercial tobacco is tobacco that is sold by the tobacco industry, including cigarettes, vape or e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars and other products that contain addictive nicotine.

OHA seeks to leverage community strengths and wisdom to address and dismantle the systemic root causes of commercial tobacco use that drive stress and higher use rates in some communities. This is best accomplished through asset-based, culturally specific, community-led approaches centered in community voices and practices. Our Commercial Tobacco-Use Prevention is to address the issue of tobacco use among adolescents. Since substance abuse can have detrimental effects on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of adolescents, through outreach and educational events, we hope to educate the youth and community about consequences and harmful use of drugs, tobacco, and other substances.
